Product Details

Inspired by the Norfolk fishermen’s Gansey jumpers from the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Hardinghamis a unisex scarf which incorporates the most iconic Gansey stitches;”herring”,”diamond” and “hailstones” in an enlarged, two-toned jacquard design.

The name comes from Potter Hardingham and John “Sparrow” Hardingham who both originated from a family of fishermen and whose Gansey jumpers featured the diamond net patterns and hailstones which have been used in this scarf. Another stitch which has been incorporated into this pattern is the herring – a horizontal arrow stitch which shows the herring fish swimming to the right. Herrings, crabs and whelks were the main catches of the Norfolk fishermen – herrings were caught further out to sea and the crabs and whelks were to be found on the sandbanks nearer to the shore.

The older fishermen tended to catch the shell fish, often working within sight of their homes whilst the younger, more daring fishermen headed out sometimes 100 miles from shore to fish for the herrings. So perhaps Potter Hardingham was an older fisherman who set his crab pots on the Cut, within eye sight of the shore?

Frequently asked questions

What is The Curated Store?

We are an ever-evolving pop up shop in the Cotswolds that brings together beautiful, independent brands, each chosen for their story, craftsmanship and thoughtful design. Our pop-up location and online platform give you the chance to discover brands that are unique, made with love, not mass produced.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes - we love sending our community’s work out into the world! Please note that customs fees or import duties may apply depending on your country. These are the responsibility of the recipient. Most brands are currently not shipping to the US due to the changes in the customs charges as these are now paid at source. Please email at shop@thecuratedstore.co.uk to confirm before ordering.

How long will delivery take?

Each maker/brand ships a little differently, but most orders arrive within 3–5 working days in the UK. You’ll receive dispatch emails and some brands offer a tracking link once your parcel is on its way.

Can I return an item?

We want you to love every piece you choose, but if something’s not quite right, you can return it within 14 days of delivery. Items must be unused, in original condition, and with tags intact.

What if my item is damaged or incorrect?

If this happens. Please contact us right away with photos so we can put things right. Every brand we work with is independent, so we handle each issue personally and with care.

Can I buy directly from the brands you feature?

Yes, absolutely! Many of our brands who have popped up with us now feature on our website. We love it when customers continue to support our brands once they have moved out of the Store at the end of their month.
